The Sacred Trek

The Swargrohini Trek, restricted to 15 to 20 trekkers, is significant in Hindu mythology. Believed to be the path followed by the Pandavas in the Mahabharata epic as they embarked on their journey to heaven, it is aptly referred to as the pathway of Swargarohini. This sacred pilgrimage trek remains open for only a month and a half during the monsoon season.

Significance of Vasudhara Falls

Throughout the trek, each campsite holds a poignant connection to the Mahabharata saga. At Vasudhara campsite, where they spent their first day, the youngest Pandava, Sahadeva, is believed to have sacrificed his life. The Vasudhara Falls, cascading from a height of 11,500 feet and disappearing mid-air, adds to the allure of the journey. Its mystique lies in the waterfall, never touching the ground, creating a truly breathtaking spectacle.

Permission and Preparations

To access Vasudhara Falls, Manvinder, and his companions obtained special permission from the Forest Department in the Joshimath region. Getting this authorization required submitting their mountaineering certificates and assuming responsibility for any mishaps during the trek. With all the formalities fulfilled, they set off on their expedition from Chandigarh, covering an arduous 5100 km journey to Badrinath without any rest.

The Trek Begins

The planned five-day trek commenced with the first day’s campsite at Vasudhara Falls. As they followed the trail alongside the Alaknanda River, a tributary of the Ganges, the enchanting scenery and the reputed medicinal properties of the falls uplifted their spirits. Trekkers often ascend higher to collect water from Vasudhara Falls to bring back as a souvenir.

Challenges Faced

Arvind, Manvinder’s friend from Delhi, experienced mounting fatigue due to their non-stop journey from Chandigarh to Badrinath without sufficient rest. Despite being an experienced trekker, Arvind’s tiredness was taking a toll on him. He withdrew from social interactions and expressed difficulty eating or engaging in activities. As rainfall embraced the Vasudhara campsite, they attributed Arvind’s distress to extreme exhaustion and chest congestion.

Overcoming Obstacles

Arvind’s previous high-altitude trekking experience had affected his health, exacerbating his condition during this expedition. Recognizing the importance of rest, he retired early and slept for an extended period. However, his situation remained a concern as he battled fatigue and discomfort.
