S – Stop

The first thing you do when lost during trek is stop rucking up your head, stop panicking. Instead, sit down and take deep breaths. Don’t take short breaths as it increases anxiety. Eat and drink to prepare your mind and body for rational thinking and better decision making. Reach the stage you feel you have calmed yourself down. This is the first and one of the most important survival tips for trekkers.

T – Think

Now with normal breathing and food in your belly, start with the thinking process. Which was the last landmark you recognize? From which direction you came? Did you walk too fast or too slow? This will let you know how far you could come. Where is the sun faced now? And where the sun could be at that time? Ask these questions to yourself. If you have a compass, (which you must take along before going on a trek), locate the position and movement of the sun to know the directions.

O – Observe

Observe your surroundings. Do you remember any what you see saw in the last two hours? Try to look into the map to know where it was located. If it’s not long before the sun sets, then look for the immediate shelter. If your original location is difficult to find in the daytime, it will be impossible to find in the night time. So, look for any shelter nearby if it is too late. If you have enough daylight, try to repeat the route to go back on your original track.

P – Plan

Don’t decide to stay or to move on until you have a plan. Move only if you have enough daylight and know the right directions to move. If you have nothing to be sure of, spend a little on planning. It’s worth it. If you are planning to find a shelter, make arrangements for the fire too.

Remember the S.T.O.P. Method and it always begins with a calm head which is one of most important survival tips for trekkers.
