7 Life Lessons I Learned From Trekking

The popular quotation by the legendary Sir Edmund Hillary reflects the importance of trekking –”people do not decide to become extraordinary, they decide to accomplish extraordinary things.” The statement justifies the greed of people to conquer the high mountains and their ambition to come back again with new excitement.

The type of recreation activity a person chooses depicts his own personality and behavior traits. One may indulge in going out for a weekend party or spending time at home watching movies. However, the day when an individual decides to do something out of the box leads to the other level of reformation. Trekking is one of those revival activities. Importance of trekking is what comes into the picture. I started my journey as a trekker from very beginner and achieved a lot, which gives a new perspective to my life and still learning to attain more. The lessons which I learned from trekking can be summarized as follows:

It’s Not About The Destination, But JOURNEY Itself

You can visualize the benefit of trekking while reading this incident which took place when I was trekking for Dayara Bugyal peak. There I and other group members got stuck with a bizarre situation, which compelled us to stay there midway overnight and the next day we left with no option but to move back to the base camp. We all left disappointed, but that day I realized the importance of trekking is not only reaching a goal, but the efforts that matter.

Stay patient

The notable importance of trekking that I learned is to be calm and composed while moving forward for any expedition. Whenever I feel like giving up while trekking I used to ask myself that why I started. Trekking is nothing but a Marathon on which you need to move without thinking about the consequences or result. The benefit of trekking is that it helped me rebuild my confidence scale, make me enthusiastic in nature to compete with challenges.

Just believe in yourself

The other benefit of trekking is that I started believing in my own instincts. For Instance, on my first ever trek to Nanda Devi in 2016, we reached the peak and unfortunately one of the teammates misplaced the map which is a major tool for any expeditor. I focused on my own innate ability and lead the team to the base area. So, the main goal is to believe in your soul which will never be wrong.

Maintaining mental and physical balance

Trekking is all about to test your physical endurance and psychological stability. This is what I accept to be the most projecting importance of trekking. The person going for a trek must have good protein ratio in the body and requisite mental balance in order to manage any coming difficult task in a more accurate manner. I would like to share an incident when this helped me to conquer the danger.

On the way to Nag Tibba peak, my trekking partner while hiking suddenly slipped off due to high rough terrain and I was the only person besides her. I felt very nervous at the moment. Subsequently, I realized that no other person around me can do this due to lack of communication. Then I instantly respond and helped her in getting out of that situation. I wouldn’t be able to do this if I lacked coordinating my stimulus to the nerve cells of my brain in order to react appropriately. This is the benefit of trekking which in some instance, can save lives.

Recognizing Your Individuality

The prominent importance of trekking is that after some years of taking experiences, persons begin to start introspecting themselves, their motives and character of being different from others in nature and behavior. I, as a trekker also perceived this thought of being distinct in the goals and perspectives.

Talking about my experience, I have always been a home-loving person wanted to know more and explore new things in a significant manner. One of the benefits of trekking is that it gives shape to my beliefs. This helped me in searching my inner essence and moving on to the never-ending path of reviving my deep thoughts.

Able to Discover New Things

Going along the journey, I not only escaped myself from the technological virtual environment but also explored new real exclusive things, which I will not be able to see in any other place. Specifically stressing upon expeditions of the Himalayas, there are diversified benefits of trekking in the Himalayas. It is flooded with the huge diversity of rare and endemic species of flora and fauna, different artifacts, ancient temples, and sculptures.

Global Awareness

The most vital benefit of trekking is that while discovering new habitats and natural landscapes, I noticed the fragile nature of the ecosystem. As if these isolated areas are the only reserves of less polluted rivers, distinct plants, and species. I learned the importance of trekking by knowing about water, more precisely clean drinking water which we cannot take directly from the river and streams.

Considering the fact that out of 70 percent of water abundances on the globe, only 2.5 percent is the fresh water.The future prediction is even, more eye-opening. According to the United Nation, approximately 1.8 billion people will live under water scarcity and two third of the total population will live in the water-stressed area until 2025.

I conclude that everyone should at least try at once to go on trekking. One can first do research on benefits of trekking as a whole on an individual’s life. After that, you can figure out the things which are necessary while trekking. I personally support trekking is the best type of recreational activity. It is not about going up for taking selfies and posting videos but a person should take it as a chance to know the importance of trekking by learning tricks, methods from the guide and experience from hikers.
